The Knife River has the North Shore's only naturalized wild steelhead trout population and is the only tributary with no natural barriers preventing fish migration. But its water quality is currently listed as “Impaired” from excessive turbidity (murkiness) due to suspended sediments and a TMDL study is in progress.
