Case Study: Grand Marais Shoreland Protection

City of Grand Marais
Northern MN

Sweetheart’s Bluff and part of harbor in MN Land Trust

  • Jane Prohaska: “The city itself wanted to leave a legacy to it’s citizens and protect the harbor from overdevelopment”
  • City owned the land and decided that a conservation easement was the best option. The easement allows some construction and rebuilding
  • “The City was looking ahead, and trying to protect what made them a unique community”

Standard Oil Station and Harborfront lot

  • Purchased by City in part with Natural and Scenic Areas funds, which carries restrictions on development
  • A park for all residents and visitors to enjoy
  • Will connect with the Gitchi-Gami State Trail
