Watershed Festival - 2009

Watershed Festival The 2009 Watershed Festival was the most popular festival yet for the Regional Stormwater Protection Team. About 600 people attended this year's event, which was again held in the K-Mart Parking Lot on the first Saturday in June. Despite the threat of rain and the busy construction around the mall area. Families, gardeners and others interested in learning how to keep our area water clean found their way to the tents and had a great time. We had great food, music, entertainment from Twin Cities environmental entertainer Tricia and the Toonies, and, for the first time, a climbing wall. Clancy the mercury-detecting dog also made a special appearance again this year, as did Rex, the RSPT mascot.

In addition to the stage entertainment and workshops, 25 local organizations had booths at the festival, several of which had fun children's activities including the chance to see water-loving animals from the Lake Superior Zoo and view macroinvertebrates through microscopes from Hartley Nature Center.

Workshops were again offered this year in a separate tent. Festival goers had the opportunity to discuss and learn about rainwater harvesting, homemade solar ovens and composting with local experts at these workshops.

Check out the pictures of this years' festival below! This event was funded with a generous grant from Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal Program (through NOAA). The RSPT extends much thanks to them for helping us get the word out about how to keep our area streams and lakes clean and beautiful.
